Music Monday: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Perform for Passengers On NYC Bus
I saw this yesterday and can't stop thinking about it. We've been listening to some of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's music for about a year now. It's fun and infectious.
As part of the upcoming Grammy Awards (The duo is up for seven awards), Macklemore and Lewis jumped on a bus in New York City and performed "Can't Hold Us".
My favorite part might be the girl at the bus stop at the end recognizing Macklemore as he gets off the bus.

"I'm getting too old for this shi----"
I'm taking a personal day today to recover from last night. While it was a fun, alcohol-free evening....I knew I'd feel worse today than an all-day bender!
Last night I gave my daughter her birthday present. Originally, her present was to be a day off from school for both of us, but my request was denied. Feeling guilty, when she texted me one morning that her favorite performer would be in town in November, I jumped on it. Three tickets for the all ages show, me, her and her friend. Last night was the event.
I was reticent at first....I am not a fan of live music....I expected a night of patchouli oil and the aroma of marijuana clinging to clothes....I expected lots of angst....screaming kids....
While there were some doses of angst and the younger fans seemed to scream a lot, it was a whole lot of fun.
The night started shaky....I was late leaving school and when we arrived for our "meet and greet" with one of the acts, no one knew anything about it. Once we got in, the girls went down to the floor and I staked out a spot in the grown up zone and settled in.
The first band was called Me Like Bees. They are described as an indie/alternative rock band from Joplin, Missouri. They really were a good rock act. They have a song called "Naked Trees" which is catchy and moving. They wrote it after the tornadoes devastated their hometown in 2011.
I chatted with most of the band members after the show. They seemed like a friendly bunch of guys. I bought Logan one of their CDs and a t-shirt for Haley to give him for Christmas.
Next was the act with whom my daughter is currently enamored. MOD SUN is an EXTREMELY laid back, self-described hippie rapper from Minnesota.
I am NOT this man's target audience but he was infectiously fun. He has a very positive outlook despite a pro-drug message that I am not on board with. That being said I found I had a big grin on my face the entire time he performed.
We met him after the show. He was very gregarious with his friends (he has no fans...everyone is his friend). We also met his DJ, Pat Brown. My daughter knew him and really wanted to meet him. He, too, was very friendly. Specifically thanked me for bringing the girls, commenting that it was his father's support that allowed him to get where he was today. I was impressed.
The next band was the self-proclaimed defenders of pop punk, Man Overboard from New Jersey. They were LOUD! An interesting line up of performers with two guys taking lead on the vocal. They had a loyal following in the room and played to the crowd!

The last act of the night was the headliners, Never Shout Never. These guys were my daughter's big thing for a while but she had cooled on them of late. The have had some "chart" success and had a song on the Tim Burton "Alice in Wonderland" soundtrack.
They definitely gave the kids the show they were looking for. Lead singer, Cristofer Drew, made a Jim Gaffigan reference which earned him some props from me. I kept expecting him to say "Dave's not here, man" which, if you get the reference, tells you his state of mind for the night.
He had a funny banter going with the crowd. His main instruments were his guitar and ukulele switching back and forth between each song. At one point, a girl called out that she was learning the ukulele. Drew pulled her up on stage and let her perform a song she had just written. The crowd supported her and the band tried to flesh out the song with her. She was nervous but it was a really sweet moment. The girls told me after that she goes to their school. We saw her on the way out and congratulated her for her effort.
All in all, worth the time and money spent, the headache today and the use of one of my precious personal days!

Kids These Days And Their Music...
I am not a big "music" fan in general and I truly hate this whole "autotune" stuff that is on the radio these days.
I LOVE THIS CLIP!

"Male Prima Donna" by Subtle Sexuality
While I have known about my resemblance to the Nard Dog for over a year now, I have really only explored that connection on Facebook. Once I saw his prominent role in this AMAZING video, I just had to post it.

Tom and Jerry
I truly hate Tom and Jerry. I loathe it. I can't put my finger on why exactly, but hated it growing up and hate it now when my kids want to watch an episode. Regardless, I LOVE this clip and sing it in class all the time!

Not everyone agrees with my BEP love...
A few weeks ago I professed my love for the new Black Eyed Peas song "I Got A Feeling". Cracked.com posted this recently....

I know that we'll have a ball
If we get down

And just lose it all
I feel stressed out
I wanna let it go
Lets go way out spaced out
And loosing all control
Fill up my cup

Look at her dancing
Just take it... OFF
Lets paint the town
We'll shut it down
Let's burn the roof
And then we'll do it again
Lets do it Lets do it Lets do it Lets do it

Top 10 Paul McCartney Solo Songs (Wings Included)
As a life long Beatles and Paul McCartney fan, I have really been enjoying the SiriusXM station devoted to his solo work. Here is a list of ten of my favorite McCartney songs. Like most of my lists, there really is no order to this.
Here are what I consider to be among Paul McCartney's best:
10. Fine Line - This song is from McCartney's last album "Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard." A good song all around.
9. Here Today - An homage to John Lennon, it ended up on "Tug Of War", the album he released after Lennon's murder.
8. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five - It's tempting to choose "Band On The Run" from the same album. But this one edges out for me just based on the piano work and sense of urgency that pervades this entire album. The story of this album's recording in Nigeria is legendary and just helped push McCartney that much further.
7. My Brave Face - This was a single from his 1989 album, Flowers in the Dirt. Written by McCartney with Elvis Costello, their collaboration resulted in some of McCartney's strongest solo work ever. While Elvis doesn't sing on this one (like some of their other songs) his sense of wordplay is evident in the final product.
6. Too Many People - This song is one of several songs from the four Beatles after the band broke up where the band members attacked one another. It is peppy sounding with such a vicious bite.
5. Coming Up - I always hear echoes of "Got To Get you Into My Life" in the live version of this song. Just infectious and fun.
4. Put It There - Also from "Flowers In The Dirt", it describes the sort of relationship I hope to have with my children as they grow up.
3. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - Even if it wasn't in one of my favorite MST3K episodes this one would make my list. This fun song continues a technique that the Beatles used in "A Day In The Life" and "St. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band." It is multi-layered and it tells several silly stories. A reviewer once wrote "The shear number of changes in the lyrics and music, all woven together skillfully, make it a marvel."
2. Live and Let Die - Has any other movie theme ever evoked that movie as effectively as this song? It just screams James Bond.
1. Mull of Kintyre - Written in tribute of the same named Scottish peninsula, it became the first single to sell two million copies in Great Britain. While Nan and I hate these sort of distinctions, it remains the best-selling completely non-charity single in the United Kingdom.
