I have recently learned the following story: When Maurice Micklewhite first became an actor, he chose the name "Michael Scott". He was told by his agent that another actor was already using the same name, and that he had to come up with a new one. He called his agent from a payphone in London and looked around for inspiration. He saw that The Caine Mutiny was being shown at a nearby theater, and changed his name to "Michael Caine". Caine has often joked in interviews that, had he looked the other way, he would have ended up as "Michael One Hundred and One Dalmatians."
