B is for Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down is currently #2 on my flickchart list.

I was in my early twenties when The Battle of Mogadishu occurred.  I can't honestly say how aware I was of the events in Somalia at the time.

I bought a previously viewd copy of this movie not having seen it.  I find it gripping, harrowing, and moving film.

I don't think I can sum it up any better than Evan Thomas did in Newsweek when he wrote "Though it depicted a shameful defeat, the soldiers were heroes willing to die for their brothers in arms. The movie showed brutal scenes of killing, but also courage, stoicism and honor."

  1. Haven't seen the movie yet, but have watched documentaries about it.

Really was a tragic event in history.

  3. I was in grade school when it happened, and because one of my classmates had a brother involved in the events (Staff Sgt. Tommy Field), it constantly resonates with me, although it's powerful even without that connection. One of the greatest casts ever assembled, too.

  4. Your blog brings back memories. I remember the event very well as it unfolded on TV news. Later I read the book, Black Hawk Down: a story of modern war, by Mark Bowden. The movie was good with an outstanding cast, but if you want the full story, find a copy of the amazing book. I think it's still out as an ebook. Or try the library.

I found you on the A-Z list. http://carolynpaulbranch.com
