E is for The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back is currently #28 on my flickchart list.

Do you remember when you first saw Star Wars? If you are a certain gender and a certain age, it was THE defining movie of your childhood. You were either Luke or Han when you played. You craved everything Star Wars.

Then The Empire Strikes Back came out and it added so many layers. You were blown away. “No....I am your father” rocked your little mind. Yoda letting the audience know “No. There is another” led to rampant speculation for a few years about where the story was going to go next.

This film is the reason I think one should watch the movies in release order...think of how...muted...this film becomes if you have seen the prequels first....

D is for Die Hard

Die Hard is currently #1 on my flickchart list.

I actually did not see the first Die Hard for a very long time.  It was released the summer after I graduated high school before starting college.  A large group of friends had decided we would go see it.  I was a HUGE Moonlighting fan but for some reason, I couldn't make the night in question and was put out that no one would consider changing the date!

I only recently purchased this on DVD.  I have owned a deluxe boxed set of VHS versions of the first three movies for so long.  I do wonder if this is REALLY my number one movie or if it would be dethroned by a day of flickchart ranking!!

I think it is interesting how the "Die Hard on a ..." premise is still so strong to this day.  One review I read for Olympus Has Fallen referred to is as "Die Hard in The White House"!

C is for The Caine Mutiny

The Caine Mutiny is currently #14 on my flickchart list.

I have recently learned the following story:  When Maurice Micklewhite first became an actor, he chose the name "Michael Scott". He was told by his agent that another actor was already using the same name, and that he had to come up with a new one. He called his agent from a payphone in London and looked around for inspiration.  He saw that The Caine Mutiny was being shown at a nearby theater, and changed his name to "Michael Caine". Caine has often joked in interviews that, had he looked the other way, he would have ended up as "Michael One Hundred and One Dalmatians."

B is for Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down is currently #2 on my flickchart list.

I was in my early twenties when The Battle of Mogadishu occurred.  I can't honestly say how aware I was of the events in Somalia at the time.

I bought a previously viewd copy of this movie not having seen it.  I find it gripping, harrowing, and moving film.

I don't think I can sum it up any better than Evan Thomas did in Newsweek when he wrote "Though it depicted a shameful defeat, the soldiers were heroes willing to die for their brothers in arms. The movie showed brutal scenes of killing, but also courage, stoicism and honor."

A is for The Avengers

The Avengers is currently #3 on my flickchart list.  It was the culmination of nearly 30 years of my geekiness coming to fruition.  I also got to see it with one of my closest friends, The Armchair Squid, who has become a recent comic book convert, at a midnight showing opening night.

It is sometimes interesting  to me that my love of comic books doesn't always translate to their movie counterparts.  Leading up to this movie, the only one I saw with these characters, in the theater, was Captain America: The First Avenger.  Nan and I saw X-Men on our honeymoon and did go to the two sequels.  Then I didn't go to X-Men Origins: Wolverine nor X-Men: First Class, but I'm pumped for The Wolverine.

And don't even get me started on the DC Comics movies!!!
